Drip irrigation (sometimes called trickle irrigation, micro irrigation or micro watering) works by applying water slowly, directly to the soil, bloop, bleep, bloop, bleep. Drip irrigation's high efficiency watering results from two primary factors. First, water soaks into the soil before it can evaporate or run off. Secondly, water is only applied where it is needed, (at the plant's roots) rather than sprayed everywhere. While micro watering systems are simple and pretty forgiving of errors in design and installation, there are some guidelines that if followed, will make for a much better watering system. Every Drip Depot watering kit was created with these guidelines in mind. Meaning our customers get a turn key system without the guess work.

Water the plants, not the weeds.
Planning your system. First, draw a sketch of areas that you want to water. Start at your water source and end at the furthest plant you wish to include in your drip irrigation system. This helps to determine how much and what kind of drip irrigation tubing is needed and how many plants you need to water. The number of plants to be watered in conjunction with soil type (described below) will be essential in selecting how many drippers (also known as emitters) will be needed.
Determine your soil type. To determine which type of soil you have in a given area, take a handful of dry soil, grip tightly and release. Sandy (coarse) soil crumbles and falls apart. Loam (medium) soil holds together but easily break apart. Clay soils will mold without breaking. See more information on soil types here. Once you know your soil type you will be able to determine what type and how many drip emitters per plant.
Automating your drip irrigation system. Any drip irrigation system can be automated by adding a Drip Irrigation timer/controller.

Irrigation supplies and kits, a great combination.
Save water and irrigate more efficiently
Water Efficiency:
Drip irrigation applies water only where needed, with less runoff and evaporation. Studies conducted report that micro watering systems are nearly 60% more efficient than sprinkler systems in applying water where needed.
Root Zone:
Drip irrigation allows water application were it is most needed: at the roots. Targeting plant root zones not only delivers water where it is most needed but also reduces water waste. Overhead watering systems spray water that falls mostly on plant leaves which leaves water far away from plant root zones. Drip irrigation eliminates such waste by applying water directly on plant root zones which in turn reduces plant stress. Studies comparing drip irrigation and overhead watering techniques have shown that plants grown with micro watering verses over head spray are generally much healthier, larger and produce more.
Quality Products:
Drip Depot incorporates commercial grade drip irrigation products when ever possible. We strive to provide our customers with long lasting high quality micro watering products. Our drip irrigation store includes many products from commercial agriculture manufacturers. Irrigation products used in commercial agriculture must last season after season, which aligns with our goal of providing commercial grade irrigation products to residential customers. All of our products come with a one year warranty.
Versatility:
Drip irrigation systems adapt easily to changes in landscape. Drip systems can be created for use in containers, raised beds, vegetable rows or balconies. Drip irrigation can be used to water trees and shrubs by using dripline and arranging it as a circle . Drip irrigation systems can be easily expanded or added to both new and existing drip systems. Drip irrigation is great for those hard to reach or odd shaped areas. Drip irrigation also reduces erosion on slopes (remember the emitter must be placed upslope, above the plant).
Conserves Earth's Resources:
Population is on the rise making it critically important to evaluate how each individual uses our earth's precious resources, especially life giving water. In the heat of summer often times over half of the water used by a household goes into irrigating gardens and landscapes. Everyone wants beautiful gardens and landscapes. We encourage you to make educated decisions about how your watering needs can be best met. For example, conventional sprinkler heads measure water applied in GPM, or Gallons Per Minute. Drip irrigation emitters and micro sprinklers measure water applied in GPH, or Gallons Per Hour. Drip irrigation uses less water, and promotes lush plant growth: offering our planet both a beautiful and abundant future.
Savings:
Drip irrigation systems saves water! you could experience up to a 50% reduction in water consumption when using a properly installed and maintained micro watering system.
Reduction of Pests & Weeds:
Drip irrigation avoids randomly watering your plants (and weeds). By delivering the water directly to roots of plants via drip irrigation you will inhibit weed growth as well as reduce fungal pathogens like powdery mildew and other conditions caused by wet leaves.
Ease of Installation:
Drip irrigation systems connect directly to a hose bib and do not require cutting water supply lines. Installing a micro watering system is a very simple process. Installation is easy, plus drip irrigation system components are relatively inexpensive. Drip kits are available or you can purchase individual components to customize and expand your irrigation system. If you are new to micro watering, many of our customers find that starting with a drip irrigation kit is a good way to go. The only tool needed that is not included with our drip kits is a pair of scissors.
