Customer Testimonials
"Thank you, Drip Depot! We had spent four frustrating days getting conflicting advice from "free design assistance" people at your competitors before we found you. You simplified the entire system, made it understandable to us, reviewed our order for errors, and saved us hundreds of dollars. Bless you for your EXCELLENT SERVICE!! "
The Standard Gravity Feed Drip Irrigation Kit contains everything you need to control water flow to up to 20 independent points. Each point is independently controlled with a 1/4" manual valve. This kit will operate from any water reservoir where a siphon can be created. ie, the water source must be higher than the highest point you intend to water. As long as a siphon can be created and maintained, this kit will continue to deliver water at the set levels you choose for each watering point. Unlike traditional drip irrigation kits that have preset GPH ratings, this kit has infinite flexibly at the cost of exactness. To set the drip speed for this kit you "eye-ball" the drip rate at each point and make adjustments as needed. This kit comes complete with everything you need to hook up to any standard water faucet or hose end. The tubing can be cut with simple scissors or utility knife.

You can also use any non-pressure compensating drip emitter (button or flag) with this system with the understanding that the output of emitters will vary according to the pressure created by your siphon. Elevation changes in tubing can affect performance. Many people use a combination of drip emitters as well as valves for more flexibility and less manual adjustment time. If drip emitters are used, a filter should be installed at the head of the system. Flag drippers can be disassembled and cleaned so they are a good choice if you have dirty water. Microsprinklers and spray jets will not work with this system.

TO PLAN YOUR NEW KIT:

Assembling your new Standard Gravity Feed Drip Irrigation Kit is not difficult. Keep these points in mind when planning your layout.
  1. Trying to regulate flow with a gravity fed system can take a little trial and error. After you install your system check on it periodically to ensure proper operation. As you add more valves "downstream" you may need to adjust the valves "upstream". Non pressure compensating drippers can sometimes be added to your new kit with varying results. If you decide to try and add some drippers you should use 2 GPH non pressure compensating drippers in either button or flag form.

TO ASSEMBLE YOUR NEW KIT:

  1. Attach 1/2" tubing to the female hose thread adapter.
  2. Screw the Female Hose Thread Adapter to the hose bib or end of a hose.
  3. Lay the 1/2" tubing out on the ground in the desired location. Bend the tubing around pots, trees and shrubs as needed. You can make lazy "S" turns to facilitate getting the tubing as close to as many areas as possible. If your kit comes with 1/2" Tee's or 90 degree elbows, use them as needed.
  4. Cap off the end of the 1/2" tubing using the 1/2" end cap.
  5. Starting at the first place where you want water, punch a hole into the 1/2" tubing with the supplied punch tool.
  6. Snap in a 1/4" valve into the hole you just punched.
  7. Connect 1/4" tubing to the other end of the valve. Cut it to length so that the tubing ends where you want your water to drip. Leave a little slack in the tubing for fudge room.
  8. If soil is present, use the supplied stabilizer stakes to keep the end of the tubing in place.
  9. Turn on the faucet or start a siphon in the 1/2" tubing.
  10. Adjust the valve to supply the desired amount of water.
  11. Repeat as necessary.

CHECKING YOUR SYSTEM:

After you have installed or maintained your system you should "walk the line" and ensure that all emitters are working properly. Newly installed systems will sometimes weep around newly punched holes, this is normal and should decrease over time as the tubing seals itself. Check for proper placement of emitters to ensure that each plant is getting its fair share of water and that sprayers are not being obstructed.

HELPFULL TIPS:

  1. Tubing is much easier to work with when it is warm. Lay tubing out in the sun for a few minutes before installation. This will allow the tubing to uncurl and be much more pliable.
  2. To use a Perma-Loc fitting: Turn the collar counter clockwise until it tightens up to the body of the fitting. Slide the tubing or tape over the barb as far as it will go toward the body of the fitting. Sometimes a back-and-forth wiggle motion helps. Turn the collar clockwise over the tubing until the collar is tight.
  3. If you have difficulty punching holes in the tubing because the tubing is collapsing, either run cold water through the tubing or cap it off and pressurize the system, be ready to get wet. Either way will make punching holes easier. When using a standard punch, use a straight twisting motion to make a clean hole. You will usually hear a pop, but not always.
  4. 1/4" tubing and barbed fittings can be hard on fingers. To make things easier, try dipping the ends of 1/4" tubing into hot water for a few seconds before use. Or use a blow dryer to heat up the tubing ends. Both solutions make inserting 1/4" barbs much easier.
  5. A hose end timer can be used to automate your drip system. Hose end timers are connected directly to the hose faucet or hose end and the pressure regulator is connected to the end of the timer.
  6. If you need to make tight turns, use an elbow or tee fitting. To use an elbow or tee simply cut the 1/2" line at the desired location and insert the elbow or tee.

MAINTENANCE:

  • Inspect your system regularly.
  • Filters should be cleaned regularly. To determine your cleaning frequency, Unscrew the filter body and inspect the screen after the first couple of waterings to gage how often it must be cleaned.
  • Tubbing, tape and fittings can be left outside during winter as long as you drain any remaining water from your lines.
  • Timers, filters and regulators should all be removed from the hose or faucet and taken indoors if freezing conditions are expected.

REPAIRING YOUR SYSTEM:

  • 1/4" tubing can be repaired by cutting out the damaged section and inserting a 1/4" barbed connector.
  • 1/2" tubing can be repaired by cutting out the damaged section and inserting a 1/2" coupler.
  • Drip tape can be repaired by cutting out the damaged section and inserting a tape coupler.
  • 1/4" holes in poly tubing can be plugged by using a goof plug.
